Harold Reynolds: From Cañada to the Major Leagues to ESPN

Harold ReynoldsESPN baseball analyst Harold Reynolds understands first hand the opportunities that Cañada College can provide. As a senior at Corvallis High School in Oregon, Reynolds was drafted in the fourth round of the 1979 Major League draft by the San Diego Padres. Instead of signing with the Padres, Reynolds opted to attend college and enrolled at San Diego State University. But after one term at the university, Reynolds knew he was looking for something different. That's when he came to Cañada College.

"Cañada provided a great opportunity for me both athletically and academically," Reynolds said. "Because it's a small school you receive personal attention and the staff and faculty still care about the students. The year I spent at Cañada was a wonderful experience."

The next year, Reynolds was drafted again, this time by the Seattle Mariners, and he went on to become the team's Most Valuable Player in 1987, a three-time Gold Glove winner, and a two-time All-Star. He joined ESPN in 1996 and is an analyst for the Emmy Award-winning program, Baseball Tonight. He covers the College World Series and the Little League Baseball World Series for ESPN and ABC Sports.

San Francisco Giants Outfielder Moisés Alou Discovered at Cañada

It's hard to believe that San Francisco Giants outfielder Moises Alou, who comes from one of the most distinguished baseball families in history, did not play organized baseball until he came to Cañada College in 1985. While Alou's father, Giants manager Felipe, and uncles Matty and Jesús, all had long and admired careers in Major League Baseball, Moisés was more interested in basketball as a youth.

It was at Cañada, playing for Coach Mike Garcia, that scouts noticed Alou's tremendous bat speed and speed on the base paths. In 1986, Alou led the Coast Conference with a .447 batting average and nine home runs. Later that year, he was drafted second overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"I had a great experience at Cañada College ," Alou said. "It was more than just baseball. The staff and faculty were genuinely interested in helping students succeed. Since it was a small school you received personal attention."

Alou said the lessons learned at Cañada have followed him through life.

"When you live right and treat everyone right, that is the true sign of success," he said. "I am thankful for my years at Cañada and my baseball career has almost come full circle, beginning in the Bay Area and returning to San Francisco to play for both my father and the Giants."
