ASCC Election Ballot

Meet the candidates for office in this year's ASCC election.

President Nominees

Marty Martinez

Marty Martinez

Major: Biology, GPA: 2.94

Statement: I am running to represent students of Cañada College by speaking loudly for them while also giving special attention to disenfranchised, undocumented, and low-income students. As an EOPS student, I want to be an example to the community and educational system that low-income does not mean low success. Also, I want to demonstrate to everyone that community college students are just as capable and intelligent enough to excel in education as anyone else. My leadership style is to be sensitive to my fellow student’s input of fresh ideas and needs while also looking out for the best interest of everyone. Holla!

Sandra Robles

Major: Biology, GPA: 3.33

Statement: Fun, friendly, and dedicated. These are the words I use to describe myself and are the reasons why I would make a great president next year. I currently serve as senator for student government and have learned the ins and the outs of what it takes to organize events and turn ideas into realities. As senator I have also witnessed firsthand exactly how much time and dedication it takes to be President but I embrace these challenges because I feel like the work we do is well worth it. Let’s do big things next year Colts!

Statement: That singing guitar guy is running for office?! Beyond what you may have seen in the ASCC’s Spirit Thursdays, there is much more to Matthew Abad than fun & humor. As a born again Christian, my heart is not to lead, but to serve. Over the last semester, though you may know it or not, I have been already faithfully serving the Cañada College student body as the ASCC secretary. Attending weekly meetings, and this spring’s general assembly. If elected to the office of Vice President, I will serve as the ASCC’s parliamentarian. I will facilitate constitutional statements to better suit you.

Statement: I want to run for ASCC vice president because I want to make a difference, and come from a diverse background. I can relate to everyone and comfortable with a lot of people. I am very confident with what I do. I don’t give up and I value people’s opinion. I collaborate great in a team and respect members. I give and take anything on the table. I am well organized and on time.

Jose Felix Mayen

Major: Paralegal, GPA: 4.00

Statement: I am Jose Felix Mayen and I want to run for Vice President at Cañada College. I was an ESL student who arrived in the United States four years ago. I finished ESL classes and now I am in regular classes and obtaining a paralegal degree. My goal is to promote equality and fair presentations of minorities and anybody who needs help. Also, I am committed to finding opportunities for students and always pushing them to a higher level of education. I have contributed to the organization of events such as the recent undocumented Student Forum and the upcoming art exhibit and panel discussion, Maya woman: Legacy of violence. If you want more support for all students at Cañada, please vote for me for vice president.

Major: Multimedia Art and Technology, GPA: 4.00

Statement: “What’s happening in the quad?” When will the cafeteria open? When are the Colts playing? My goal is to let you know what’s going on. As part of the multimedia program, I understand the importance of communication. Stumbling upon events or hearing about something important after the fact is not fun. As a student leader, my number one priority will be to communicate as much as possible to you. Of course, what you do with the information is up to you!

Treasurer Nominees

Major: Nursing, GPA: 3.18

Statement: I want to be able to advocate for all Cañada College students as a way of continuing the great work that ASCC has provided us. Also, I want to make sure that all the resources are equally distributed between all the clubs and programs, and working with transparency for all students to have equal opportunities. The most important things is work to as a team to help advocate for students, and to educate them about the importance of becoming leaders. As a student, there are so many things I will do to help empower students to become more civically engaged.

Major: Business, GPA: 4.00

Statement: My name is Julia Chand, I am a returning student at Cañada College and I am running for the ASCC treasurer. With over thirty years of working experience in the banking industry, I have the financial skills to provide the best service as your treasurer. In addition, I manage the finances in my own household and am adamant about establishing credibility and ethics by balancing my checkbook and paying bills on time. I already have experience in this particular position, as in the mid eighties I served as the assistant treasurer for two years in the NCO/EM wives club in Alaska.

ASCC Senator Nominees

Major: Nursing, GPA: 3.78

Statement: I have experience as a senator! This past school year, I already spend great time in ASCC. I n ASCC I can improve my leadership skills. One of my leadership skills is that I am a good listener. First I’m going to listen carefully to all of the ASCC members and I’m going to be making all decisions carefully. I also pay attention to all Cañada students. I will make a great effort to make all students happy. I was Vice President in my country’s high school. Therefore I’m going to use skills that I used in my high school. I would like to improve and support the college.

Major: Early Childhood Education, GPA: 3.23

Statement: My leadership skills are base in the knowledge gain through the time and relationship I gain with my classmates and schoolmates. I see Cañada College as an opportunity in order to go to other colleges. I understand the necessities of the students which include actively listening to them; I would like to solve problems or conflicts, establishing new programs that can help students to achieve their goals. To have better job opportunities in our community as well as more volunteer jobs, supporting programs like EOPS, TRIO, and Mesa. I would like to help everybody to have an opportunity to go to college and university, and become a new generation with better education.

Statement: As students we need a lot of necessities which could not cope without the support of programs such as EOPS, MESA and TRIO. One of the most important priorities is to have an efficient dialogue with the students. Encourage them to continue signing up to these programs because through them we accomplish a mutual goal, our education. We need to put a voice in our requirements. Another important goal to achieve is: establish new programs that can provide assistance for students in search of jobs opportunities in our community. Also our college needs to create a contact and be more involved with nonprofit organizations. In that way we can give something back to our community and at the same time be a role model for them.

Statement: Being a student of low income, doesn’t mean that we cannot reach our goals. For that reason, I want to be your voice; I want to help Cañada College students to reach their goals. Therefore, we need to work together to find the way to support students and all the programs that help us such as EOPS, MESA, and TRIO, and clubs at Cañada College. We must work as a team if we want results; so, I will work for you with honesty, and transparency.

Major: Computer Science Technology, GPA: 3.25

Statement: As a student I know that we have a lot of obstacles in our path such as: family, low income, health problems etc. one of the reasons why I am trying to join student government is because I want to help the students of my community. The success is based on community union. I will work for you to reach a common goal; which is to make solutions and new programs that can help us to make a new Cañada College (the Cañada College of hopes and union). I will principally help existing programs such as EOPS, TRIO and MESA to continue supporting students that are transferring to the university because with these programs students have more chance to reach their goals and don’t become criminals.

Statement: Recreating the fun, unity, and student body involvement in activities on and off campus will make the name Cañada College a commodity that rings bells. As senator, I plan on working with future officers of student government in making that happen.
