Film Series, Jam Session and Performance Art Highlight Black History Month Celebration
All events are free and open to the public.
Cañada College will host a series of events in February to celebrate Black History Month. The Black Student Union, in partnership with the Office of Student Activities and the Associated Students of Cañada College are sponsoring the events. They include:
• Discussion and Presentation - Police Brutality in the Black Community: University of San Francisco Professor James Taylor will lead this discussion from 2 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3 in Building 3, Room 142.
• Black History Month Film Series: Films will be shown Feb. 8, 9, and 16 in the Main Theater. A complete listing of films and times can be found at the Office of Student Acitivites.
• Bring Your “A” Game - Discussion and Presentation by Phelicia Jones: Jones is the executive director of Hope Preservation, Inc., a grassroots community organization in Belmont. The discussion will be held Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Main Theater.
• Film Screening - Soundtrack for a Revolution: “Soundtrack for a Revolution” tells the story of the American civil rights movement through its powerful music -the freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. The screening will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Main Theater.
• Black Art Performance: West African dancers, poets and an open mic highlight this event. It will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Main Theater.
• Othello - a Live Performance: A live performance of a scene from the play will be held Thursday, Feb. 18 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Flex Theater.
• Jam Session and Discussing the “N” Word: Join the Black Student Union as they discuss use of the “N” word and briefly view the film “The ‘N’ Word.” This event will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. in Building 9, Room 312.
• The Impact of Religion on the African American Community: This lecture will be held Thursday, Feb. 25 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Building 3, Room 142. It will also feature praise dancers, gospel singers and soul food.
