Success with EOPS!

EOPS Orientation

1. What is EOPS?

Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOPS) is a state funded program designed to assist low-income and educationally disadvantaged students gain access to and successfully complete a program of higher education. EOPS students may also be defined as “at risk” since students who are academically under prepared and have financial need often have a difficult time remaining in college without the services of programs such as EOPS.

At CC, EOPS serves 400-500 students a year: a highly diverse population of men and women of all ages from various ethnicities, races, cultures, and life stages (from recent high school graduates to re-entry single parents to retired persons seeking a new career).

2. Counseling: Academic Counseling

EOPS helps students develop a Student Education Plan which includes appropriate basic skills, sequencing of courses, and prerequisites for degree applicable courses.  EOPS also provides information on major and graduation requirements for a Certificate of Achievement and/or Associate Degree at Cañada College, track students’ progress, assist with study strategies or refer for tutoring (if needed) and help with class scheduling and registration of classes.  Referrals to ESL, DSPS, English and/or math assessment, Learning Center, and tutoring are provided if need is indicated.

3. Counseling: Career Counseling

Counselors assist students with selecting a major; administer and interpret career interest tests on an individualized basis; and refer students to Career Center for more extensive vocational assessment, if needed.  We also provide information on job market trends and help students learn how to research occupations and job outlooks using resources such as the Library, Career Center, and College/Career Planning courses.

4. Counseling: Personal Counseling

EOPS support consists of the following:
Crisis intervention
Short-term counseling on personal and family issues
Referral to Health Services or off-campus agencies for long-term psychological services

5. Counseling: Priority Advising

EOPS students receive priority advising and registration services.  With priority advising, students can meet with counselors at the beginning of the registration period and preparation for the coming semester.  Students can then register, using priority registration privileges, for classes one week prior to the start of general campus registration.

6. Book Services

Active EOPS students who have signed an EOPS Responsibility Contract & Student Educational Plan, have completed a minimum of three (3) contacts with their assigned EOPS Counselors and are full-time enrolled each semester may receive a book voucher to help pay for some of their book expenses.  Book vouchers are generally available from EOPS through  the first few weeks of instruction.  Students are notified by mail two weeks prior to the distribution of the book vouchers. A registration printout and a counseling visit are required to pick up EOPS Book Vouchers.  In addition, newly accepted EOPS students must bring a copy of their Student Education Plan to their EOPS counselor if it has been previously completed with another CC counselor.

7. Book Services

EOPS book vouchers must be used at the CC Bookstore and can only be used to purchase required textbooks and workbooks for classes in which the student is enrolled (not for supplies, equipment, uniforms, or other required materials).  EOPS Book Vouchers are good for a single, one-time purchase and are not transferable.  There will not be any refund or reimbursement from EOPS or CC Bookstore for books that are purchased elsewhere.  If the books you need are not available, you must see the bookstore manager for instruction.

8. Workshops

Incollaboration with the Learning Center, library, TRIO, and MESA, EOPS provides a variety of workshops on different topics requested by our students each semester.  Past workshops have included: UC and CSU application overviews, financial aid application processes, time management, and study skills.  The workshops are designed to help students develop skills necessary to succeed in college.
