We are looking for students in grades 9-11th who wish to attend college and require support and information to make that happen. You don’t have to be the best student; you just have to have the motivation to make a change! Upward Bound is a federal program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of Upward Bound is to create and promote access to higher education for low-income and potential first generation college students. Cañada College Upward Bound Program in collaboration with Sequoia High School provides academic support and motivation to eligible high school students in the communities of Redwood City and East Palo Alto that aspire to become the first in their families to complete a college degree.

It is the mission of Cañada College’s Upward Bound TRiO Program to provide participants the necessary preparation and opportunity to enter post secondary education through the values of Education, Diversity, and Community.

What Does the Upward Bound Program offer?

  • Weekly tutorial services
  • Preparation for post-secondary education

  • Leadership and community service opportunities

  • Admissions test preparation and practice (PSAT, SAT, ACT)
  • Mentoring, Career Planning, and life planning workshops

Academic Year Program

Weekly tutoring - Students meet with Upward Bound tutors for academic assistance in their high school courses. Monday - Friday from 2:00pm - 5:30pm at Sequoia High School.

Saturday College - Saturday workshops prepare students for academic success. Students learn and review study skills such as time management and critical reading, as well as gain insight and information on the college admissions process, requirements, and financial aid information.  Most importantly students get the motivation needed and confidence to reach their educational goals.
Advising - Upward Bound staff regularly monitors each participant's academic progress and grades. Staff members provide information on selecting high school courses that meet the CSU and UC systems requirements, as well as private colleges/universities.
Test preparation - Students receive practice for the PSAT, SAT, ACT and when needed preparation for the High School Exit Exams (CAHSEE).
College & Career Planning - Guest speakers are invited throughout the year to share their personal stories of perseverance and education in order to motivate students and empower them to choose education. Guest speakers cover topics such as personal challenges, professionalism, and career options. Students learn about different careers and what majors lead to certain fields.

Academic Calendar

The Upward Bound Program is a year round program, offering Academic Year (traditional school year) workshops and tutoring at Sequoia High and at Cañada College. During the summer months Upward Bound provides a daily commuter program for six weeks offering academic courses, workshops, and educational field trips and activities. All classes are taught on the Cañada College Campus. To better serve our students and staff our calendar provides dates and times for Cañada College and Sequoia High School events and holidays.

Saturday College 2008-2009

Saturday College takes place once a month. It begins in building 17-107 at 9:00am and will end at 2:00pm. Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to learn. Breakfast and Lunch are provided by the program; however, students are expected to pay for their own transportation. Saturday College dates are as follows:

  • October 11th, 2008
  • November 15th, 2008
  • December 13th, 2008
  • January 31st, 2009
  • February 21st, 2009
  • March 21st, 2009
  • April 25th, 2009
  • May 30th, 2009

Summer Program

  • Six week intensive and comprehensive academic program
  • Educational and cultural field trips
  • Participate in leadership development activities
  • Receive academic, personal, and career advising counseling
  • College tour for eligible participants

Upward Bound Qualification

  • To meet basic eligibility requirements the applicant's family must meet income criteria established by the US government. http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/trio/incomelevels.html
  • The applicant must be the first generation to receive a four year college degree.
  • Participants must be a US citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Students must be in grades 9-11th and attending Sequoia High School and/or reside in Redwood City or East Palo Alto.
  • Selection is based on recommendations from teachers and counselors, grades, test scores, and a personal interview.
  • In addition, students must show a desire to improve academically and demonstrate strong interest and potential for succeeding in college.

Selection Process

Due to the limited number of students we can serve, admission to the Cañada College Upward Bound Program is competitive and selective. Applicants must complete all forms and provide documentation to be considered for the program.

  • Meet all eligibility requirements
  • Submit a complete application and provide supplemental materials
  • Interview Process with program Director or Program Services Coordinator

Student Application and supplemental materials are due by the proposed deadlines to be considered for the program. To be considered for the Summer Program, there is a priority deadline of May 1st.
Once the applicant has gone through selection process, the Director makes a decision and notifies the student and family by mail. If you have additional questions about the selection process, please contact the Upward Bound Office.

Upward Bound Application and Supplemental Materials

  • Application including 2 essay questions, signed and completed.
  • 2 Teacher/Adult Recommendations (not a family member).
  • Copy of student's Social Security Card or Permanent Residency Card.
  • Copy of recent tax records.
  • Copy of recent progress report or grades.
